P.O. denies rescue delay
PA Wellington Wellington Radio had notified New Caledonia that a
yacht was aground on a reef several hours before distress calls were heard by South I Island citizen’s band radio enthusiasts, said a Post Office spokesman. Two Invercargill citizenband radio operators who : picked up messages at 9.30 a.m. on Saturday had said that bureaucratic bungling had endangered the lives of the crew unnecessarily. , Caledonia early on Saturday morning. They were rescued by helicopter at first light on Sunday. The skipper, Murray Alistair Reid, and his companion, Wendy Te Ngamu, were both unharmed. The Post Ofiice spokesman said that Wellington Radio had heard Suva Radio trying to pass a message to Noumea about a distress call from the yacht, at 2.30 a.m. on Saturday. The distress message was passed on to Noumea by Wellington Radio soon after 2.30 a.m„ the spokesman said. “There was no Post Office delay whatsoever,” he said.
