Satis digs up facts
More than 100 Christchurch companies have joined Satis, the information service for business and industry, which opened at the Canterbury Public Library in November. Satis—Scientific and Technical Information Service—is a telephone service which give members instant access, through its staff, to information in the Public Library, to a national network of research institutes, and to a world-wide Telex link, to centres specialising in scientific and technical information. From November 7 to August 31, the Christchurch service received 675 inquiries for addresses and contacts,
journals, technical articles, scientific data, statistics, patents, and background and financial information. Questions ranged from the legal requirements for packing perchloroethylene in Australia, and how many television sets had been sold in New Zealand since 1967, to what was the Prime Minister’s salary, and what was the first verse of “Good King Wenceslas?” Satis is not a profit-making sendee; it is sponsored by the Government and the Christchurch City Council. A wide range of companies are members. They pay an annual membership fee. of $2O, which goes towards buying more reference material.
