Success at last for Somerset?
NZPA-Reuter London The cricketers of Somerset, who have never won a trophy since the county club was formed 103 years ago, are set to end that sequence by winning two trophies in two days next week-end.
Somerset beat Gloucestershire by eight wickets at Bristol to stay four points clear in the English Sunday League. If it avoids defeat against Essex next Sunday it is sure to be the champion
On Saturday Somerset plays Sussex at Lord’s in the Gillette Cup final.
Viv Richards, the brilliant Antiguan batsman who has played a major part in Somerset's rise to glory, was in the thick of the action as usual—but this time with the ball. Richards took three for 32 as Gloucestershire slumped to 125 for nine in its 40 overs. Somerset knocked off the runs with eight overs to spare, the captain, Brian Rose, scoring 49 not out.
Its only remaining rivals, Hampshire and the reigning champion, Leicestershire, both won and could still finish level with Somerset on points. If that happens, the title will go to the team with the highest scoring rate.
