Trevino races away at Addington trials
By
G. K. YULE
I re vino gave an encouraging indication that he is on the way to staging a successful comeback when he won at the Addington trials yesterday. He set all the pace and won very 7 easily by five lengths and a half.
His 3min 30.5 s for the 2600 m was quite respectable.' He took Imin 0.4 s for the last 800 m and had plenty in reserve after returning 30s for the final 400 m. Trevino might resume racing at the New Brighton meeting on September 16. Wee Win, a shade slow early, settled in sixth place and came on steadily in the straight to cut Motu Prince out of second by a head. Wee Win looks much im-i proved by his two races at | the national meeting and he will strip a fit horse for the A. E. Laing Free-for-all this Saturday.
Motu Prince, winner of the 1977 New Zealand Derby Stakes, looks to have thrived during his winter lay-off.' According to his trainer, Maurice Flaws, he has not done much fast work, but he has plenty of solid training. He looks in great order to Start another campaign. Jaunty Hanover, obviously improved as a result of a run at trails last week, also came on quite well for a fair fourth, with Teacher’s Pride, Lord Module and Aurum Bay following.
Lord Module looked to begin quite well, but after three or four strides he pigjumped and tangled. He settled about four seconds from
the leaders and was nine I places from the pacemaker for most of the way. He made up ground over the final 800 m in 59.45, with his last 400 m in 295. He looks in magnificent order to resume racing, either at the New Brighton meeting on September 16 or in the Ashburton Flying Stakes a fortnight later. Orkan put plenty of zipp into his win in the event for three-year-olds. He led throughout and was going keenly all the way for Westj Butt. He won easily by five I lengths after a slow 3min| 37.6 s for the 2600 m, the last! 800 m in Imin 2s, the final! 400 m in 31s.
Orkan will be a big’ chance in the New Brighton Stakes on Saturday, a race in which Jack Smolenski intends starting only two of his three acceptors. If Sovereign starts Passable will be scratched, he said yesterday. Ko tare Victor, which broke at the start, went fairly for second, but he was well beaten at the end. Black Gypsy was a short length away third, ahead of Roydon Rio and Dreamy Forbes. Lord Charles and Nugget finished a length and half in
front of Radiant General in the event for Cl to C 3 pacers. Lord Charles led over the last 1200 m and won by a head after taking 30.6 s
for the final 400 m. He has drawn badly on Saturday.
Flaxton, last for much of the way, made up much ground for fourth. He looks ready to extend the sound record he compiled in the winter. MAIDEN PACERS Bachelor’s Gold and The Wild Dream won the races for maiden pacers. Bachelor’s Gold will secure a start on Saturday as Lady Everdina is to be scratched, . according to her trainer, ; Murray Purdon. i Bachelor’s Gold shaped i pleasingly and it will not be ; surprising if he makes a bold bid on Saturday. Ota ICreek, a candidate for the same race, was doing well in thrid position, ahead of Sarabelle. The last 400 m took 30.25.
Scotch Tar, which is to resume racing on September 16, lost ground at the start of the race for trotters. He gradually improved and when given a little rein close to the finish he strode to the front with ease to have a length to spare over Lifeline at the finish. Lifeline looks ready to go well on Saturday in the Ern Smith Handicap. Quaid and Lightning Tuft were next to finish, both trotting sound races. They are in the Introductory Handicap on Saturday.
The last 800 m of this event took Imin 3s, with the finmal 400 m in 31.85. Results:—
