Names cause confusion
Names have always been confusing in the area west of Christchurch. Before local road boards were set up in 1863-64, the name Riccarton referred to a vague, wide area west of Hagley Park. The result of this is that Riccarton primary and high schools are now in Sockburn and the Riccar-
ton Racecourse in Yaldhurst To add to the confusion, the Sockbum school is in the Hornby County Borough and the Hornby Domain in Islington. To confuse things even further, the Main South Road runs almost due west on its way out of Christchurch through Hornby.
