Fair row cloudy, but still cooking
Who did what at .the Industries Fair on Monday is still in dispute, but yesterday the cooking stall of Mrs Gwen Kerr was open —with full approval.
The director of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Federation (Mr I. D. Howell) said on Monday evening that a health inspector had objected to ' cooking smells from Mrs Kerr’s stall, and had tried to close it. The Christchurch City Council assistant chief health inspector (Mr D. R. Batten) said yesterday that there had been no attempt to close the stall, and he was “at a loss to know what it is all about.” As far as his department was concerned, all persons at the Industries Fair were doing what was required of them. “There never was an incident,” Mr Batten said. “There must be some misunderstanding.” Mr Howell said yesterday that a complaint had been made by “a fairly junior inspector” about an offensive smell from the cooking demonstration, and that Mrs Kerr had been told that she was not allowed to hand out samples. “She is back in business, and very happy,” Mr Howell said.
