Teacher’s report
Mrs Rosenthal, asked to select one cartoon from the work of each youth, and to comment on them, says: “Laurence van de Lingen (top cartoon), shows more artistic potential than most because of his use of perspective. Each scene is an artistic composition — an achevement in itself. “For a 14-year-old he shows a mature understanding of politics and social conditions ; he has potential as a cartoonist. He has precision, clarity, and conciseness. He stands out above the rest.” # SS :S “John Stringer (middle cartoon) has good potential. He has the ability to handle subject matter in a clever way. With his use of the kiwi he is picking up on local humour — and the purpose of comic strips is to make people laugh. “New Zealanders need to laugh a little more; at the moment they don’t laugh at themselves too much. :!< :i: # “Mark Rastrick (bottom cartoon) is more into the human form and shows potential in the way he handles it. His ideas are not as clear as the others, and in his use of perspective you can see the influence of comic books. “At 13, though, he draws better than most adults. Most of all he needs more experience.”
