Second face-lift in four years
The Union Steam Ship, Company’s vessel Union 11 Melbourne is undergoing a[( second jor alteration ,1 since it was built in 1973. The 4043-ton vessel is I having a stern ramp fitted I < to permit it to run Pacific ■ ■ Island and other ports where [: there are no roll-on, roll-off 11 linkspan facilities. ;< Union Melbourne was first I registered under the own-h ership of Northern Coasters,' Ltd, of London. It was de-: cided that she was too small; ( i in terms of cargo capacity! [for the Union Steam Ship: i Company’s charter. The ship was built at J. J. I [Sieta’s yard in Hamburg, ’West Germany, and completed at the Norbiskrug 3 Yard at Rensburg, on the , ! Kiel Canal. In 1975 16.8 m was added i [to the ship to comply with , : the Union Company’s Ye-j ' qutrements. She was drylocked at the Norbiskrug: [Yard, the. hull cut in half 'and the new section was dropped into place. On her way to New Zea-, land after the “stretching” [ she damaged a propeller in [ > the Panama Cana! and con-1 i tinued on one propeller. *
Ihe Union Melbourne later replaced the Hawea (now named the Coastal Ranger) on the Lyttelton-Wellington-Melbourne run. Her owners, Northern Coasters, Ltd, had run two similar vessels on a shuttle service across the Irish sea. A stern ramp is being added at Singapore.
