Defence policy settled; White Paper out soon
PA Wellington The Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon) said yesterday that he did not expect any big changes in the Government’s defence White Paper, which will be completed soon. Its main purpose was to indicate that New Zealand would maintain a defence ■ force that it could afford .and was acceptable to the country’s allies — particularly its A.N.Z.U.S. partners, |he said. i He said that the Cabinet
had made some decisions on the White Paper at its meeting yesterday and these would go back to the Cabinet Defence Committee. The document was then expected to go before the Cabinet for final approval and then to the printer. New Zealand’s ability in economic terms to mount a defence effort was a great deal less than it had been five years ago, Mr Muldoon said. New Zealand’s allies understood that, he said.
