No land for parking
A five-metre strip in the Spreydon Domain should not be set aside for more car parking, according to the Christchurch City Council’s parks and recreation committee.
Parking space had been sought by the Christchurch United Association Football Club. The Director of Parks and Recreation (Mr H. G. Gilpin) said he “would object strongly” to the club’s taking part of the Domain Terrace
reserve for parking. A few years ago, some of the park had been lost to the Spreydon Bowling Club. While the football club used the park for some activities, “it is evident the parking is primarily for the club’s private activities, and those associated with their headquarters building,” he said. It would be contrary to Reserves Act provisions to use public reserve land in that way, said Mr Gilpin.
