World speed skating

NZPA Sydney The Australian speed skating champion, Jim Lynch, from Sydney, has won the 1500 m final of the Australian open speed skating championships. Lynch, aged 30. played a cat and mouse game with the reigning British champion, Harry Spragg, in a slow first half of the race. But for the last five laps the two speedsters had the crowd on their feet showing sizzling pace in a neck and neck tussle. Lynch proved too strong near the finish and drew away to a seven metre win. A young Queensland hopeful, Michael Hearn, was third. Lynch's time was a slow 3m 8.45. A new Australian record was set in the senior women’s 1500 m with the eventual winner, Vaida Doratis from New South Wales, finishing in 3m 0.75.
