N.Z. cyclists ‘happy’
NZPA Hobart. New Zealand cyclists failed to impress in the 193 km Lauceston-to-Hobart race in Tasmania on Saturday. A veteran 47-year-old Tasmanian, Allan Bird, won line honours in the race with Timothy Slater, aged 16, second. Another Tasmanian. Noel Salter, aged 29, won handicap honours with a time of 4hr 22 min 34sec. A team nf seven New Zealand-i ers competed in the race and their top performer was Jim Ryder, who was twentieth on handicap. _The other New Zealanders who
finished the race, Wayne Perkin* •on, Tony Horne and Robert Ol> ver were twenty-first, twents-sed ond and twenty-third respefi lively. The race was a warm-up foe the three day Tour of the Nortb which starts on Wednesday. Although they failed to win, the New Zealand team was happy ; with its performance in the race' i Six of the seven were off I scratch and the leading siS ; riders in the rac e were off mark* (ranging from 46 to 55min. « ’ The New Zealand team mem» bers made their return trip from Hobart to Lauceston yesterday as a final tune-up for the Tou r of the North.
