Twenty-four new gin traps offered for auction in Motueka were knocked down to the Motueka district S.P.C.A. inspector, Mr Andrew Blair, for $4B. He set to work immediately on the traps — cutting them up with an oxy* acetelene torch. This type of trap has been declared illegal in both Nelson City and Motueka Borough, but it is still legal within the Waimea County.
Mr Blair said the society had paid the $4B knowing that the traps would be destroyed and that animals would not suffer through their use. “Some people get upset about a cat or dog getting their legs mangled in these traps, but they’ don’t mind oppossums getting caught. It’s difficult to get them to understand that opossums suffer the same agonies,” he said.
