Liquor rise denied
PA Wellington The Department of Trade and Industry has denied a report that beer and spirit prices will increase within the next few days. A departmental official, asked to comment on a report from Blenheim which quoted a "reliable source,” said the prediction was “completely haywire.” "My department makes the decision on beer and spirits prices, and we have given no approval at this stage for increases in prices,” the official said. However, three breweries — Lion, Leopard and Dominion— are believed to have applications with the department for price rises to offset higher costs. The Hotel Association of New Zealand is also understood to have an application with the department for the increases, if granted, to be passed on to the public. The Blenheim source had said that the imminent price rise would probably put 6c on a jug of beer in a public bar, with “half handles” rising by 2c.
