Snow cuts pass
Snow closed the main highway near Arthur’s Pass yesterday afternoon and it was not expected to reopen until this morning at the earliest.
Yesterday’s snow followed heavy falls on Wednesday evening, and road-graders spent much of the day attempting to keep the road clear. Although the pass itself was officially closed most of the day, some ve-
hides still attempted to get through, and had to be rescued.
By last evening, it was completely impassable between Arthur’s Pass village and the Otira Gorge. Toll links between Greymouth and Christchurch were disrupted by the snow storm. Circuits were lost after midnight between Greymouth and Christchurch,
