Abduction puzzle
The Christchurch police last night were investigating the reported abduction of a young girl in Golf Links Road, Shirley. A witness said he had seen the girl — aged five or six — dragged screaming into a car yesterday afternoon by a middleaged man. But no child had been reported missing in Christchurch by late last evening, and extensive police
inquiries had not established whether the girl had been abducted, or whether the incident had a domestic background. “At this stage, the - e is still a possibility that the whole thing was legitimate,” said a police spokesman. The witness said the girl had been pulled into a late-model Japanese ;oupe outside 61 Golf Links Road about 4.45 p.m. The girl was described
as aged five or six, with dark brown hair. She was wearing a pink dress and brown shoes. The man was aged about 40, with black, shoulderlength hair, a black moustache, and a beard. He was wearing a grey suit, a light-coloured shirt, and a dark tie. The police were anxious to hear from anyone who might have seen the incident, or could “clarify the situation.”
