Labour’s tax policy

Sir, — Cedric Mentiplay thinks that the cost of Labour’s tax package “seems likely to be more than $400M.” It appears he is using National Party estimates, which have ranged widely (and wildly) from S73OM to $475M. Surely it would be fairer to use either (a) Labour’s figure of S3B6M, a figure arrived at after careful costing by independent accountants and economists; or (b) The Treasury figure of S4OOM minus or plus a margin of error. Clearly the Treasury accepts Labour’s estimate within its own calculations. Mr Mentiplay should play fair and do the same. — Yours, etc., E. BERRY. August 16, 1978.
