Power lakes storage improves

Lake storage levels improved considerably last week after increased inflows and steady savings. The improvement meant that it was not necessary to draw water from Lake Hawea, and only a nominal amount of oil had to be jurnt for electricity generation, said the general manager of the Electricity

Division (Mr P. W. Blakeley). North Island storage was maintained at 23 per cent and the South Island level rose from 60 to 75 per cent of nominal full. Over-all, New Zealand’s storage rose from 51 to 63 per cent, he said. Savings were fairly steady at 9 per cent, compared with 9.8 per cent the previous week. The total expenditure

on fuel for electricity generation fell 13 per cent to SI.IM. The contribution of gasfired generation fell from 20 per cent to 18.6 per cent, while oil-fired generation was only 0.2 per cent, coalfired generation 3.5 per cent and geothermal just over 5 per cent. Hydro stations contri uted over 72 per cent of the total energy supplied during the week
