Building costs double

PA Wellington It still costs more to build a house in Wellington than anywhere else in New Zealand, but this is changing. Building costs in New Zealand mostly have doubled in the last five years, according to figures given yesterday by the Institute of Valuers. Present building costs

per square foot to build a standard house of 1000 sq.ft, and percentage rises over five years ago, are:— Auckland $21.05 (80 per cent), Wellington $21.77 (66 per cent), Christchurch $19.33 (95 per cent), Dunedin $20.95 (118 per cent), Napier $19.21 (85 per cent), Hastings $18.90 (84 per cent), New Plymouth $19.26 (83 per cent), Palmerston

North $20.09 (104 per cent)* Invercargill $21.00 (140 per cent). The general trend is that costs in the smaller and more remote areas have drifted closer to the traditionally higher costs of the larger urban areas. This is explained by higher transport costs to remote areas, and more uniform wage rates
