E.E.C. curbs loom over meat trade

The recent boost to Lyttelton J s export cargoes by sheepmeat shipments could be a thing of the past if the Common Market imposes heavy limits on sheepmeat imports. The managing director of Seabridge. Ltd (Mr Peter McCallum) said that such import limits would also disrupt the transport system to Europe, effecting wool and other export trades. Four Continental shipping lines have joined New Zealand interests in opposing eny limits— Nedlioyd Lines, Rotterdam; Lloyd Triestino, Trieste; Compagnie Generale Maritime, Paris; and Hapag Lloyd, Hamburg. New Zealand at present exports about 700,000 tonnes of meat a year, Including 310,000 tonnes of sheepmeat, the secondhighest such export in the world. E.E.C. member countries are New Zealand's most important sheenmeat clients: last year they bought 221.000 tonnes, or about one-third of E.E.C. requirements. Seabridge, with Australia, New Zealand. Europe Container Service shipped the big percentage of the exports with a fleet of 14 ships. "The viability of the whole New Zealand-Europe trade depends on the continued presence of sheepmeat, and if this were lost the service could suffer.” said Mr MeCallum. **Los® ed the valuable basic

cargo would inevitably lead to substantial Increases in shipping rates tor other commodities. “The New Zealand-Europe route is one of the world’s longest liner hauls and a strategic break-even point of basic cargo must be met to maintain the current economies,” he said.
