Compensation ruling
PA Auckland The Accident Compensation Commission has reversed an earlier stand and accepted that, in some instances, hepatitis B is an occupational disease among nursing staff. The decision has been described by the Superintendent of the Auckland Hospital Board (Dr R. F. Moody) as one of the most important health decisions to affect staff in recent years. Hepatitis B had always been regarded by the medical profession as an occupational disease
among medical staff, said Dr Moody. An Auckland Hospital Board nurse who contracted hepatitis B Initially was declined compensation but with the boar! supporting her case far review the commission later changed its mind. Dr Moody said eviience was produced to show that hepatitis B was usually spread by contact with blood, other body fluids, and body waste, Nurses and other medial staff came into contact with such substapces n the course of their duties.
