Hit drug peddlers ‘hard’

PA Carterton No mercy should be shown to hard-drug peddlers, who were murderers of the worst sort, said the Minister of Police (Mr McCready) at the opening of a new police station in Carterton yesterday.

The Government had increased penalties for those offenders and it was now up to the judiciary to play its part.

“I hope those sitting on the Bench will deal with the utmost severity with these offenders,” said Mr McCready. The establishment of a drug network in New Zealand was a grim reality which had resulted in an increase in other serious crimes.

Already' the presence of firearms among drug dealers and couriers was becoming [more prevalent. The Government was determined to come to grips i with this scourge and had [announced increases in police [staff that would permit the deployment of an extra 35 men for drug law-enforce-ment duties.
