Canterbury to seek aid
The Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon i will soon be asked to recognise North Canterbury as an area needing regional-develop-ment aid. High unemployment in the area could now make it eligible for a regional development council, said the Acting Mayor of Christchurch (Cr P. J. R.
Skellerup) yesterday. A letter to Mr Muldoon may be ready this week. Earlier this month, a steering committee agreed that the Christchurch City Council should convene a meeting of all concerned organisation between the Rakaia and Conwav rivers to promote the region’s economic development.
Cr Skellerup said that a special Governmentapproved council for the region might not be permanent — it 'night have to exist for only three to 10 years, for example — but it was badly needed now. The Mayor (Mr H. G. Hay) will be asked to head the first meeting of North Canterbury groups.
