A Cuban folktale
One morning, two farmers met on a country road. The first one asked: “Have you seen a lost horse go by?” The second man answered: “Was he lame in the left front leg, blind in the right eye, missing some front teeth, and dragging a long rope?” “Why yes,” said the first man. “That’s certainly my horse. Did you see where he went?” “I never saw him,” replied the second farmer. “Then how on earth do
you know so much about him?” “Well,” said the second farmer, “I can tell by the tracks in the road that a horse passed by, protecting his lame left front leg as he walked. I can see also that he grazed only on the left side of the road and so he must have been blind in his right eye. And it is plain from the unbitten blades of grass that some front teeth were missing from his mouth. And anybody can see that there is a track left here in the road by the dragging rope."
