Wild stock to be killed

About 650 wild cattle and horses will be killed on the Chatham Islands because of damage they have caused to a Lands Settlement Board farm. The chairman of the Board (Mr N. S. Coad) said that farm workers had been unable to keep up with repairs to damaged fences, and stock were wandering. The wild herds had also eaten feed

on the farm and destroyed native flora. The horses were too poorly bred or lame to be tamed, Mr Coad said. Attempts to muster the cattle had failed; only 30 or 40 from a mob of 350, had been caught in the last three years. The board had not yet decided how 7 the animals would be killed, Mr Coad said.
