Police swoop on gangs after shooting
PA Auckland Eight young men will appear in the Magistrate’s Court in Auckland today on charges of attempted murder after a week-end of gang violence in the city.
A further 18 youths arrested — during one of the biggest police operations of its kind in Auckland — will appear in the Magistrate’s Court in Otahuhu on a variety of charges. The police said the violence, which involved members of the Black Power and Mongrel Mob gangs, appeared to be linked with clashes between the two groups at Hastings and Masterton last week-end. Chief Inspector J. Morgan said yesterday the trouble seemed to have started on Thursday night when a member of the Black Power gang was assaulted. and his girlfriend allegedly abducted and raped. Then, on Friday afternoon, a house in Te Papapa occupied bv Black Power gang members was wrecked. The two gangs clashed In the car-park of the Ellerslie Motor Inn on Friday evening.
A shotgun was fired during the confrontation, and pellets hit one young gang member in the arm. He was taken to Green Lane Hospital, and after treatment discharged. The Armed Offenders Squad was placed on standbv and about 50 off-duty uniformed nolice and detectives brought in. A big nolice nartv visited a house in Massey early on Sunday afternoon and took eight vouths f o the Auckland Central Police Station fr>r Questioning over the shooting. less than an hour later, other vouths arrived at the house and s<*t about wreakin<r havoc. Four were later arrested and charged with wilful damage.
