N.Z. trounces Canada in first women’s hockey test
PA Dunedin New Zealand beat Canada, 4-0, in the first women’s hockey test at Dunedin on Saturday. New Zealand’s skilful forward line went straight into action on the surprisingly good University oval and within 4min Sue McLeish had the ball in the Canadian net.
But then the visitors settled down and New Zealand’s next three goals had to be wrung out of a plucky
and determined Canadian defence. Pat Barwick flicked a second goal home mid-way through the first spell and it was 2-0 at half-time. Shirley Haig and Marianne Gray scored in the second spell. Barwick had a good game controlling play in mid-field for New Zealand and the forwards, playing 4-4-2 formation like Canada, were very impressive. Marianne Gray had a great second half. She was
everywhere and her goal was thoroughly deserved and loudly cheered by the large crowd. The teams were; New Zealand: Sue Barry, Kathy Petre (replaced by Allana Hiha), Eedie Weber, Jill Morgan, Pat Barwick (captain), Jan Neill, Sue McLeish, Shirley Haig, Jenny McDonald, Marianne Gray, Pip Lunn. Canada: Teresa Tetreau, Jean Gourlay, Sue Jameson, Dianne Whittingham, Shelley
Winter, Lynne Beecroft, Sally Manning (replaced by Jill Crook), Sandy Tufnail, Sheila Forshaw, Sandy Drever (captain), Margaret Dalgarno. In the curtain-raiser, Otago took the Bass Worthington Trophy for under-21 teams, beating North Shore, 1-0, in an exciting game. The goal came in the last minutes from Marie Flannery, who had an outstanding game.
