Mairehau High School and Mane ha u A are level at one| match each after the first two: games in the best-of-three series i to find the winner of the women’s inter-club basketball competition. Mairehau High School is seek-' Ing to retain its title it won last season. The deciding match will be played on September 2. The school side won the first match,. 48-41. giving a purposeful display and capitalising on Mairehau's slow start. At one stage : the school team led, 28-8, and at; half-time led. 34-13. However the school team ap-; peared to tire and tried to sit! on its sizable margin. Jenny! Armstrong and Mary Fastier! stood out for Mairehau, scoring with several good shots. The final five minutes were particularly testing for the voung. school side but despite making [ errors it had a big enough lead to hold off the late challenge of| Mairehau. In the second match, Mairehau began much more confidently and narrowly won the match.' 63-61. With Jeanette Howard and Donna Broughton working hard for the school side, it led. 32-22. at half-time.

A more energetic, bustling approach paid dividends tor Mairehau in the second half. It harrassed the younger school players. forcing handling errors and gradually took over the lead.
