Bad luck gives N.Z. sale

New Zealand’s sheep industry will benefit from the misfortunes of Australia, where a blue-tongue type of virus was found last year. A prominent Canterbury sheep breeder, Mr P. N. Martin, has helped negotiate a contract in China for the sale of 800 New Zealand sheep, which are expected to be flown from Christchurch to Shanghai in November. The consignment, a plane-load, will include 60 stud Romney rams, 700 commercial Romney ewes, 10 stud Lincoln rams, and 30 stud Lincoln ewes. The Australian stock agency firm of Elder, Smith, ' Goldsborough, Mort, had been trading in livestock with the People’s Republic of China, but after the discovery of the virus the Chinese banned the importation of sheep from Australia. Hie Australians, precluded from selling their own sheep to China turned to New Zealand sheep. Most of the stock will come from Canterbury.
