Fullbore gold to young Canadian
NZPA-Reuter Calgary Canda's Desmond Vamplew, the youngest rifleman competing, won the fullbore shooting gold at the Commonwealth Games yesterday and then watched his Ider brother. Patrick, win a shoot-off for the bronze. After being chaired Bisleyfashion to the winner's rostrum. the first thing the 22-year-old business manager did was make a telephone cal! to his father, who is seriously ill in a Toronto hospital. Despite only shooting on a 1000 yard range once a year, Vamplew had an astonishing 73, missing the bull just twice over the longest distance. He kept cool in the scorching heat to finish with
1391 out of a possible 405, three points ahead of the second-placed Englishman Jim Spaight, who improved on his bronze in Christchurch four years ago. Patrick Vamplew tied with David Calvert, of Northern Ireland, on 387, but the Toronto student completed an
outstanding family double by winning the shoot-off, 22-19, for the bronze. The brothers, who could be mistaken for twins, hugged and kissed each other on the range in front of Prince Philip. Canada finished the shooting competition with an outstanding tally of four golds out of six. plus two silver and a bronze. The experienced New Zealander Maurice Gordon, the; gold medallist in 1974. look-; ed set for a late charge after: a 74, missing the bull once‘ at 900, but a 67 on the last detail stopped him in his tracks and he finished sixth. “Things just didn’t click for me in the morning round, that’s when I lost it,” Gordon said. i
