McFadzien lowers Hayes

In a major upset, Paul McFadzien (University), beat Rod Hayes (Christchurch 1) in five exciting games in the latest round of the men's A grade squash competition. The first two games were won by McFadzien, who was stroking freely and dealt mercilessly with any loose shots from Hayes. A general tightenlng-up bv Hayes saw him level the scores at two-all. In the final game McFadzien quickly went to 6-0 after a succession of winning cross-court drives. At this stage the ball broke :and on resuming play Hayes 'played good defensive squash to gain four points. But greater con.centration and mobility by Me|Fadzien enabled him to take the match. 9-4. | For his fine ’effort, McFadzien was awarded the Frank Creighton “player of the week” award. In another surprising match. Bruce Trangmar 'Christchurch I) upset Barrie Matthews in four games. He drove firmly to the corners and showed great accuracy with his backhand when the opoortunity to kill the bal! arose. ; To continue the upsets in this match, an 18-year-oM. Hamish Dowell, competently disposed of the experienced Laurie Wilson, exhibiting a wide range of nicely-hit shots. Sumner had a surprisingly easy victory over Christchurch 11. Prominent for Stunner were Ron Marshall and Ryan McCutcheon.

| Marshall stuck to his task welll after losing the first game to! ’love against George Balani andi reaped his reward when Balani: appeared reluctant to work for a win. ’ McCutcheon also showed plenty jof determination to head off (Lloyd Williams, who has been [having a good run of wins lately. Accuracy on the volley and crisp driving kept Williams constantly moving so that he had little chance to play his favourite drops at front-court. Lawrence Skurr (High School Old Boys) ended a comfortable winner against Craig Hibbert (Linwood) but for the first two games he looked far from being a Canterbury representative.! Everything he hit seemed to go astray. Hibbert was almost as inaccurate but was fortunate that j Skurr made more errors than' him, when out of hand. Viv Hargreaves (H. 5.0.8. and Mike Grant had a see-sawing match which Grant appeared likely to win in four but ended by being outclassed in the fifth game. Both players hit their shots solidly, playing to a good length and finding the corners with their cross-court drives. Hargreaves was very accurate with his mid-court drops while Grant hit some beautiful, wristy, low cross-courts. Old Boys lead with 36 points, with University on 28 lying second. having supplanted Burnside I who had the bye. Points are:
