Soccer Western spills vital point
Western’s chances of winning the Broadlands Southern League soccer title took a blow on Saturday when it was held to a 2-2. draw by New Brighton. The point was an important one for Brighton as it helped ease its relegation worries. Des Duffy and Adrian Kersten •cored for Western while Peter Bennie, from the penalty spot, and John Trowbridge were Brighton’s scorers. Two goals by Malcolm Parker — one a penalty gave Rangers a 2-0 win over North End United in a tough match which Rangers did not dominate to quite the extent it should have done. The points were vital to Rangers however, moving it into first position on the points table. Dunedin City has three games in hand. , Two penalties helped Technical to. a 3-0 win over Northern Hearts at Ensors Road. Murray Smith and Michael Millward scored them and Warren Quirke added a third in a match which generally lacked good finishing. Doug Jury scored the equalis-
ing goal for Cashmere-Wander-ers two minutes from time in its 1-1 draw with Shamrock at Riccarton Domain. It was an unfortunate match for Shamrock — two of its players, John Brand, its goal-scorer, and Tony Steer, were sent off.
