Community service grants

Sir,,—Regarding Cr Garrett’s comments on grants to 5.0.5., Rape Crisis, Women’s Refuge, etc.,—such organisations are indeed “trendy,” but not in the disparaging sense she means. Rather, they are contemporary evidence of that centuries-old trend for women to fight back against their oppression. If our sisters of the nineteenth century- had not followed the trend Cr Garrett herself would not be in the position she is today. At a time when women have to fight that other frightening trend towards increased political and physical violence against them, how ironical that a woman councillor uses her position to oppose City Council support. -— Yours, etc., PENNY FENWICK. August 4, 1978.
