Jobless ‘peaking’

Unemployment will "peak” at its present level over the next month or two, says the Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon) the Press Association reports. The latest Labour Department figures show that, including those on relief work, the unemployed now total 45,638. "When the season takes up again in October, the

absolute figure will come down,” said Mr Muldoon. “This time next year it won’t be hitting this height or anything like it.” Along with the drop in unemployment, Mr Muldoon forecasts an increase in retail trade in the last quarter of this year: “Some manufacturers are already aware that they won’t be able to meet the

demands of retailers,” he said. Manufacturing had "got the message” of the increase, credit was quite easy, and more disposable income was becoming available. There would have to be care that the economy did not move into a “boom situation” but he was confident it would move to a more normal one, he said.
