Greyhounds Auckland pup steals honours

BOB SCHUMACHER
The husband and wife training team of Peter and Lois Henley became involved in greyhounds when they ■ lived at Oxford and became : interested in the longtails through Jock Walsh, a veteran owner-trainer of dogs who lived in the same rural community. The Henleys have, had much success with their team of greyhounds and they trained Rise and Shine to win the 1975 New Zea- | land championship. Not long ,after that they moved to ! Australia and then returned to New Zealand and established their kennels -in Waiuku, south of Auckland. It was possibly a touch of nostalgia and possibly the fact that the Henleys knew thej' had a youngster of considerable potential that persuaded them to send Majes--1 tic Chance to Christchurch for the feature puppy classic at Queen Elizabeth II yesterday afternoon. Whatever the reason, the white 'nd brindle Ungwilla I Lad bitch did her owners! proud by winning the main) (race in style yesterday. Ap-| I propriately, the pup had been kennelled at Mr Walsh’s Oxford property through the week and. in the absence of the Henleys, Mr Walsh was present to accept the handsome trophy. Ironically, the pup that Majestic Chance wore down in the home straight was a youngster in which Mr Walsh held a part ownership. The 1976 New Zealand champion bitch, Sally Havoc, was represented in the final of the America’s Trophy by three runners and two of them. Arithmetic and Lisa Havoc, took advantage of i their inside draws to make I the early running. • Majestic Chance, which i drew the outside box. show--1 ed early acceleration but she was forced wide around the; first bend and along the 1 back straight. ; The field bunched entering ! !the home straight and at least seven of the eight; ! finalists had winning; (chances as they started the; last 100 m. But Majestic; Chance was not to be de-i nied; although forced over 1 much extra ground, she found extra reserves of stamina and came strongly down the middle to win i I going away. J In a mass finish for the ij minor placings, Arithmetic (Stuck gamely for second | with All Okay a creditable ! thira. All Okay could not ! find an opening on the in- ; side of Arithmetic as she the home straight J and had to move outside .: that runner. i That slight check and t changing course at that crucial point might have denied her victory. Sarkhan Sal, which finished determinedly, f and Lisa Havoc were in t close attendance on the t - minor place-getters. Ariki Sue, slightly disappointing in the South Island championship at the last meeting when she t> missed the jump, made
amends by beating a strong open field over 540 m. The little Karakara Kid bitch was favoured with the inside draw, and she bolted out best and was clear by five lengths down the back. Although Smoky Hobbs finished brilliantly after missing the jump he found the deficit too great to overcome, but he outfinished the consistent Fashion Comet, another front-runner which found Ariki Sue’s early pace too hot. .Results: — Novice Stakes, 350m.—01d Bryn (B.
