Dam pace may slow
PA Wellington It seems clear that New Zealand will have to ease the pace of building new electricity generating capacity, according to the Minister of Energy (Mr Gair). Opening an environmental conference in Wellington on Saturday, Mr Gair said, that caution must be exercised in any moves for a substantial scaling down in planning for new hydro dam capacity. “In the next 12 months, however, serious consid= eration will have to be given to the long-term supply and demand of all our energy forms, to ensure the right energy ‘mix’ in the best interest of the nation,” he said. Mr Gair said present indications left little doubt that the Clutha Valley must continue to be developed.
