Threat of vote switch

PA Auckland A group of National Party rebels in Eden is on the point of throwing its weight behind the electorate’s Labour candidate in the General Election this year.

The group is strongly opposed to the sitting National member, Mr A. G. Malcolm, and has been looking for a candidate to stand against him on a National Alternative platform.

A spokesman, Dr W. T. Morris, said that so far the group had not found the candidate it wanted. If a suitable candidate did not come forward by July 23, the group would switch its support to the Labour candidate. Dr J. C. Hinchcliff. Dr Morris said his group had about 200 active supporters, and he made it plain that the group’s prime objective in supporting Dr Hinchcliff would be “to get rid of Aussie Malcolm.” The group is opposed to Mr Malcolm mainly because of his strong stand in support of the present abortion legislation. It also claims that he has failed to represent the prevailing views of his electorate.
