Hamilton’s may get Govt help
Machinery contracts might help keep boilermakers and engineers at the C. W. F. Hamilton factor}' in Christi church, said the Prime 5 I Minister (Mr Muldoon) on Tuesday. Mr Muldoon met union shop stewards and company management yesterday after concern had been expressed about the lack of heavy machinery contracts, and the future of the company.
There were “one or two small jobs, and one large ‘one, that I can think of” which could help the company, he said. Continuity of work and delivery time were two big problems in heavy engineering.
This Was the first year the company had not taken on apprentices, representatives of the Canterbury Boilermakers’ Union and’ the Canterbury branch of the Engineers’ Union told Mr Muldoon. Skilled workers would drift from the factory because of the lack of work, they said.
