Bid to retain railcar
Greymouth reporter The campaign to have the West Coast-Canterbury rail link fully retained will be taken to the Minister of Railways (Mr McLachlan) in Wellington today. The delegation will comprise representatives of local bodies, trade unionists and other persons interested in the retention of the railcar services. The West Coast party will join in Wellington with a delegation from Canterbury, : including two representatives of the Christchurch City
Council, the Mayor of Timaru (Mr S. R. Bennett), the Trades Council, and the executive officer of the South Island Promotion Association (Mr M. Foate). The deputation will be introduced to the Minister about 3 p.m. by the member of Parliament for Christchurch Central (Mr B. G. Barclay). “It is not a political issue, it is just a delegation that will be fighting to retain the present rail services,” the Mayor of Greymouth (Mr O. H. Jackson) said yesterday.
