Drunken driver blitz

Sir, — The Transport Department, ably assisted by the news media, especially radio, has given wide publicity to its two-week blitz on drinking drivers. The announcement that the first night after the start of the blitz was a quiet one with many sozzled drivers thought to be going home from the pubs in taxis is not surprising. They would be fools if they did not take precautions against being caught till the end of the two weeks blitz. After that the lid will be off again. Whv did the Transport Department not keep silent about the blitz and its timing and duration and keep the drunken drivers guessing? It would almost look as if the department does not want to catch them and is only putting on a show for the public. “Vainly is the snare set in sight of the bird.” — Yours, etc., H. G. ROYDS, July 15, 1978.
