Parachute fails
PA Palmerston North A woman died after her parachute failed at the Taonui Airfield, Feilding, at 2.30 p.m. on Saturday. She was
Helen Mary Corkill, aged 33, married, of Palmerston North.
Mrs Corkill was the Manawatu Skydiving Club’s packing instructor and had about 700 jumps to her credit. She died in the Palmerston North Hospital.
Mrs Corkill was making a jump from 2800 m with five other members of the club when her main parachute malfunctioned and the emergency ’chute became entangled with the main ’chute, which she appeared unable to jettison. She was among the last to leave the Cessna 206 aircraft.
This is the second parachute accident at the airstrip within two weeks. Mr Owen Larson is still in the Palm* erston North Hospital with back injuries after a malfunction during his first jump on July 8.
