Goals galore in women’s hockey
There were no surprises—just plenty of goals—when the senior women’s hockey competition resumed on Saturday after a break of four weeks. Carlton led the scoring spree with eight goals. Results:— Carlton 8, Harewood 1. Burnside 1, Digbys 0. Cranmer 4, University 0. Woolston-Rawhiti 5, Linwood United 0. Points: Woolston-Rawhiti 9J, Carlton 7J, Burnside 61, Harewood 6, Cranmer 6, University 2, Linwood-United 1, Digbys J. Carlton v. Harewood Although the scoring margin between the two teams was high, Harewood was not disgraced. It struck Carlton on a day when that team knitted together better than at any previous time this season, and Harewood also had to battle against a team which had everything going its way.
Play in the first half was fast and open rind only three goals resulted. Jane Wilson opened for Carlton with a hard, angled shot, followed by a fine individual run and goal by Shirley Haig. Harewood came back strongly in the second half and had quickly forced a corner, from which B. Turbott slammed home a hard shot. Back came Carlton with an incredible run of five goals from Mrs Haig. The left wing, J. Cummins picked up a pass from her right to end the scoring. Mrs Haig was supplied with plenty of possession by fellow New Zealand team member, Pat Barwick, and these two players fully showed their class. Both teams moved the ball crisply from centre-field to the wings, with Carlton being faster to the loose ball and gaining more possession. Umpires: Mrs H. Colenso and Mr Maclnty. Cranmer v. University Cranmer’s goals were evenly
spaced at two in each half. In the first half, Cranmer was on top, taking advantage of University’s slowness to settle to a rearranged team. Goals came from inside right, J. Miller, and right wing, M. Sheriff. Cranmer’s half line was up in good support, and it dictated the play. University looked more certain after the break, but play deteriorated and became sluggish. Cranmer, however, took the. opportunities, and D. Wilson pushed the bail home during a scrimmage close to the University goal mouth, and left inside W. Stewart scored the final goal. Cranmer’s centre half. E. Bracker. showed great anticipation of the direction of play. Umpires: Mrs Rigaldo, Mr Gilliver. Woolston-Rawhiti v. Linwood United In a scrappy game on a bumpy ground at North Hagley Park, Woolston-Rawhiti always looked
comfortable against Linwood United.
J. Verdellen opened the scoring early from a corner. Although Woolston-Rawhiti enjoyed the bulk of possession for the remainder of the first half, only one more goal resulted. C. Butts pushed the ball home from close in front of the goal mouth after several shots had gone wide of the net.
Linwood United looked stronger after half time, and seemed more willing to attack. Several right flank attacks looked promising, but lacked sting on reaching Woolston - Rawhiti’s circle. Woolston-Rawhiti gradually regained most of the possession and after a long series of attacks, two goals in quick succession came from J. Verdellen and L. McArtney. Near full time, right wing R. Whatarau scored the fifth goal. Linwood United’s goalkeeper. M. Ford, showed no lack of courage as she was forced to face the opposing forwards often and several times, unsupported. The right-half, M. O’Brien, trapped and marked well. Umpires: Miss Wardill and Mr Jesset. Burnside v. Digbys The first half of this game provided the spectators with two
evenly matched teams, both prepared to put pressure on their opponent’s defence at every opportunity. Play fluctuated from end to end, with neither team managing to score a goal. Burnside, in particular, had some very close misses. Trapping looked difficult on the bumpy ground, and this led to quick changes of possession. It was well into the second half before the goal came from J. Galloway, a penalty stroke resulting from a Digbys player handling the ball. Play was scrappy for much of this half, only brightening for the last 10 minutes when Digbys came close to equalising the vital shot glancing off the post. Both teams had changed lineups. Digbys showed improved form, while Burnside lacked the sparkle provided by J. Phillips’ presence in the forwards. The left-back, H. Phillips, stood out in Digbys defence, and goalkeeper, M. Graham, earned due applause in saving a second penalty shot and bringing off some great “saves.” For Bumside, the left half, M. Clinton, was consistently in position and trapped well, and H. Denny and J. Allen worked hard for possession in centre-field. Umpires: Miss Bowyer and Mr Black.
