Canterbury may have a talented new middle-dis-tance athlete in Tom Birnie, judging from his performance in finishing first man for Canterbury in last Saturday’s big 10,000 m Skellerup Steeples Formerly of Waimate and now running for the New Brighton club, Birnie is best known for his win in the Canterbury 1500 m championship. He has recently been
doing resistance training under the expert guidance of the former Mr Great Britain, Frank King, at the Queen Elizabeth II Park progressive resistance gymnasium. The benefit of this was evident in the additional strength he has acquired to handle the 10,000 m distance in exceptionally heavy going on Saturday. In addition to his natural speed which gave him
the 1500 m title and the stamina he showed in the Skellerup, Birnie is also endowed with natural jumping ability, proof of which is shown in the above picture of him clearing a hurdle in fine style in spite of slippery take-off conditions. His combined capabilities of speed, stamina and natural spring, suggest he ’--•v well be one of Canterbury’s finest all-rounueis.
