No ‘bumper war' fear
From R T. BRITTEN DEN, for NZPA Birmingham "We are not looking for a bumper war but if it does develop we have slightly more ammunition than the Pakistanis had. But I don't think it will develop into one," said Mark Burgess yesterday, when asked about his plans to discuss with the England captain, Mike Brearley. the problems of recognised and nonrecognised batsmen In the test series. Burgess said that he would be talking to Brearley after the test teams had been selected perhaps on the day before the match.
"We will exchange our lists of non-recognlsed batsmen and discuss them," he said. He added that even the nonrecognised batsmen might not be spared the bouncer If he bats long enough to cause the opposition a problem. "If he hangs around long enough he runs the risk 0* being treated as a batsman," Burgess said. "The business of not bowling bouncers to nonrecognised batsmen is entirely in th» hands of the captains In England," said Burgess. "The question of limiting the number of bouncers to two an over or three in two consecutive overs is a matter for the umpires," he said.
