Jail for robbery
A young unemployed man who robbed Timaru Motors at Washdyke at gunpoint last month was sentenced to four years jail when he appeared in the Supreme Court at Timaru yesterday, the Press Association reports. Peter Broughton, aged 20, had earlier pleaded guilty to the charge at a depositions hearing at Timaru. The Court was told yesterday that at the time of the robbery in which $2500 in cash and cheques w’as taken Broughton had two bullets in the rifle he was carrying.
Counsel for Broughton (Mr I. G. Mill) said the idea for the robbery came after Broughton overheard friends in a hotel planning to burgle Timaru Motors.
Mr Justice Casey said that for one so young Broughton had built up a depressing record of dishonesty and violence. His Honour said the courts took a very serious view of armed robbery. He said he was left with no alternative but to sentence Broughton to a long jail term.
