Colts favoured against Coast
Greymouth reporter
The New Zealand Colts rugby team will open its five-match internal tour with a match against West Coast at Rugby Park Greymouth today. While the Colts will be favoured, the West Coast will rely on the fact that it is the Colts’ first game together. The game is also part of the West Coast team’s build-up for the Ranfurly Shield challenge against Manawatu on July 29. The Colts will be taller and heavier than their counterparts, but the home siue must be ready to unsettle the opposition before it can set a team pattern for its tour. West Coast showed that size meant nothing when it all but beat MidCanterbury last week.
The Colts have some minor worries involving injuries among the chosen locks, but these have not yet
restricted the selections for the game. Rugby Park is likely to be a little heavy, but the rain which caused this has disappeared and overhead conditions are expected to be good. The visitors trained at Mclean Park on Thursday, and at Rugby Park yesterday morning, under their coach, Mr Peter Burke (an All Black selector). The Colts hooker, Gordon McCormack, will be making his second appearance on Rugby Park in a week. Last Saturday he hooked for MidCanterbury. The Colts team is: Ray Gordon, Ken Taylor, John Collinson, Ross Gibson, Lachlan Cameron, Nick! Allen; Andrew Donald; Andy Hollander; Craig Ferguson. Wayne Shelford, Lucky McDonald, Bruce Robertson; Ken Borovich, McCormack; Neil Porter. Reserves: Backs: Chris Hiini, Rod Richan, Lawrie Holmes. Forwards: Terry Murphy, Ken Shaw.
