Flood of telegrams
PA Wellington The office of the Minister of Labour (Mr Gordon) has been “inundated” with telegrams from clerical workers demanding a ballot in the Clerical Workers’ Union. “The overwhelming number of telegrams received has rendered it impossible for me to reply on an individual basis. But I can say that I am encouraged by the interest of so many people in having the opportunity to vote on the unqualified preference clause in their award,” Mr Gordon said yesterday. “However, the facts of the matter are that the Federation of Labour in
its meeting with me earlier this week raised a valid point about the ballot. The Government proposes to discuss this furthe- with the federation when it meets the -caucus labour committee next Thursday,” he said. However, Mr Gordon said that subject to the outcome of that meeting it was still intended to proceed with a ballot of workers covered by the Clerical Workers’ Award. The ballot might taka several months to complete because of the number of people covered by the award, Mr Gordon said. Union report, Page 3
