“National” days
Sir, — It is fashionable for campaigning groups to nominate a special “day” or “week” to promote their causes. Wondering whether permission was needed to hold these “national” occasions, I made inquiries. I was informed that such occasions can be publicised without permission. Hence, if I were a tiddley-wink enthusiast, I and my fellow-en-thusiasts would be entirely free to launch a "national” tiddley-wink day. We could also freely adopt the promotional tactic, sometimes employed, of urging people supporting our campaign to wear a garment of a particular colour on the day concerned. However, I would strenuously oppose this proposal, on the grounds that it would be totally unfair on unsuspecting members of the public who unwittingly might comply, but who had no interest in tiddley-winks. I would point out that such a gimmick would, probably earn, and deserve, public censure, and thus risk bringing our campaign into serious disrepute. — Yours, HELEN HERVEY. July_l3, 1978.
