M.E. talks surprise

NZPA-Reuter Vienna The Israeli Defence Minister (Mr Ezer Weizman) and the Egyptian War Minister (General Mohammed Ghani Gamassi) will meet today (N.Z.-time) in the Salzburg area, the Australian Foreign Ministry has said. The Ministers were expected to meet at the Fuschl Palace, near Salzburg, where the Egyptian President (Mr Anwar Sadat) has been on holiday for the past three days. In Tel Aviv, Israel Radio said earlier Mr Weizman would meet President Sadat as well as General Gamassi. The meeting was fixed after General Gamassi, responding to an Israeli suggestion. cabled Mr Weizman Jon Wednesday: “Ready to (meet you in Salzburg or [Vienna’tomorrow ...” 1 The Israeli Prime Minister

(Mr Menachem Begin) apparently summoned Mr Weizman, the Foreign Minister (Mr Moshe Dayan), the Chief of Staff and senior intelligence and Army officers — and it was agreed to accept the offer. The meeting comes four days before planned talks in London between the Foreign Ministers of Israel and Egypt and the American Secretary of State (Mr Cyrus Vance). Reports earlier said that General Gamassi had told Mr Weizman there could be no meeting until Israel came up with new peace proposals. Genera! Gamassi and Mr Weizman met several times in Egypt after President Sadat’s epoch-making journey to Jerusalem last November and were reported to have got on very well.
