Petition well regarded
The Maruia Declaration petition on native forests, which has more than 300,000 signatures, has been recommended for “favourable consideration” by a Parliamentary select committee. The “favourable consideration” rating is the second highest of the five possible grades of recommendation by a select committee. Although the select committee expressed ’‘some doubt” about one
clause of the petition which deals with the setting up of a Nature conservancy to administer the forests, it supported the other clauses. These call for the legal protection of native forests, an end to the wholesale burning of forests, an end to the logging of virgin forest outside Westland by the end of this year, and a more conservative use of land, energy, and water resources in the production of forest products.
